There is a logic to dress.
Dress is a field popularly regarded by most men as illogical as a result of general ignorance stemming, in part, from the lack of proper and methodic instruction in popular guides, and the tendency of self-described fashion experts to treat sartorial knowledge as esoteric and arcane to the point of making the field appear unintelligible.
Though these factors have contributed to the belief that dress sense cannot be learnt (“one either has it or has not”) this belief is misleading. Rather like any respectable field, it is something that can be learnt beginning with the basics of:
1) Colours
2) Patterns and Textures
3) Proportions
4) Context and Semantics
5) Plot and Narrative
An understanding of these basics form the foundations of dress and provides the reader with the means to begin cultivating his own personal style. Like any other skill, learning how to dress involves thoughtful, intelligent and perfect practice beginning with the basics. Without this mistakes are made, repeated and internalised.
In the Fundamentals series I will be introducing the reader to the basics of dress. I have attempted to make the field as accessible as possible to the uninitiated, explain the logic of dress clearly and methodically, and lay the groundwork for future pursuits in the field.
At The Hounds we believe how a man dresses can tell us how he wishes to live his life. Here’s to living well.
